My novel starts shipping Feb 10. No more delays!
I started writing it in January 2009. I finished it July 2023. It took me 14.5 years. Then I spent a year sending the manuscript out to publishers. I got dozens of nopes. Then I finally got a yep. I handed the finished manuscript in last October. I received my proof copy in November. I found a lot errors in the proof copy that I’d missed because it’s easier to spot errors on paper than on a glowing screen. I sent the corrected proofs out in mid-November. Then Canada Post went on strike. The strike ended a little over a month later. It still took a long time for the proofs to arrive at Vacant City Editions. But everything is done now.
IF YOU WANT TO ORDER A COPY: The paperback is $29.95 and the eBook is $16.95. The audiobook will be out sometime this year. You can order the novel directly from Vacant City’s Big Cartel page: https://vacantcitybooks.bigcartel.com/product/danny-lindsay-all-the-quiet-hours
If you don’t have a credit card but want to buy the book just contact me and we will work something out. Type Books in Toronto will be carrying the novel at all 3 locations (Queen West: 883 Queen St W. The Junction: 2887 Dundas St W. & Forest Hill: 427 Spadina Rd.). We’re trying to get the book carried at a few more brick-and-mortar places but we haven’t heard back yet.
I don’t want to put the book on Amazon because Jeff Bezos is an evil villain but if that turns out to be the ONLY way to get reader reviews then that’s what we’ll do. For now though, it’s not on Amazon. If you’re on Goodreads and want to leave a review, there will be a page for All the Quiet Hours sometime this Feb. I’ll update this post with the link as soon as I have it
IF YOU WANT AN INSCRIBED COPY: I can do that. Note: I would NEVER inscribe a copy unless somebody asked me to. It’s an arrogant move unless somebody asks. I’m very proud of the novel but I’m not a well-known writer. I’m not a well-known anything. I would not presume to inscribe anybody’s copy but a few people have asked me for inscribed/signed copies so IF you want one, email me at essayelf at gmail or email Vacant City at vacantcitypublishing at gmail and tell them your name or your order #. It would be helpful to have your name so I can inscribe the book to you but if you just want me to sign my name and stay anonymous, I can do that too. I’m going down to my publisher’s office next Friday to sign however many copies they have requests for and they’ll be shipped out over the weekend.
PRICING: The paperback is $29.95 and the eBook is $16.95. There WILL be an audiobook version sometime this calendar year.
Here is some plot information. No spoilers. I promise. It is a tripartite novel with a single chapter at the end.
It’s June 2010 and two best friends, Jacob and Miles, are spending their summer nights searching for a missing comic book in a makeshift landfill. Jacob’s mother cleaned his room and threw out his copy of Captain Beyond #1. Jacob enlists his chronically lazy pal Miles to help him look. They were friends when they were kids but not so much recently. The leader of their childhood trio - Simon - is missing. When they’re not looking for their comic book, they search for Simon. Part I is narrated in the first person by Miles.
Two sisters, Justine and Regan, meet affluent men online. Then they rob them. It’s a sweet scam for them until they rob the wrong guy: a violent sociopath hellbent on revenge. Part II is a fast-paced crime thriller narrated in the first person by Justine, the more cautious sister. ;)
Simon (the missing person from Part I) has just been honorably discharged from the Canadian Forces. He moves to Toronto and quickly falls back into his old habits: drugs and drink. Pretty soon he meets his match in a grizzled geezer named Howard and finds himself in over his head in a cross-border smuggling scheme. Part III is a black comedy narrated by Simon.
Narrated by Jacob, the guy from Part I whose mom threw away his favorite comic book, Part IV is nothing like the first three. The first three parts are novellas. Part IV is less than 40 pages. It puts the button on the story. It’s the closing chapter of All the Quiet Hours.
Dreamer and schemers, suck ups and fuck ups, these six souls are just trying to pursue their lives. Sometimes they catch up. Sometimes it’s their lives that pursue them.

That’s the news. Lose yr blues.
If I ever do complete another novel, it won’t be for years and years. For a long time there I thought I’d be like Robert Musil, an Austrian writer who worked on a novel called The Man Without Qualities his entire life. It was still not complete when he died.
If you have already ordered a copy, thank you very much. If you want to, now you know how.
xoxo ;)
